Ministers are under pressure to speed up the repeal of pre-Victorian laws which make it a crime to sleep rough and are still being used to take homeless people to court. Now a cross-party group of MPs has written to the minister asking him to support a proposed bill which could repeal the act in a matter of days. The Vagrancy Act is used hundreds of times a year to prosecute people — often suffering from mental health problems and drug addiction — who sleep rough on the streets of Britain. Campaigners have long called for its repeal, arguing rough sleepers should be offered help rather than treated as criminals. It is an antiquated piece of legislation whose time has been and gone.
