Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and presidential hopeful, recently apologized for a statement in which he said being gay is "absolutely" a choice. In an interview on CNN, the potential Republican presidential candidate commented that "a lot of people who go into prison, go into prison straight, and when they come out they're gay, so did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question. Since then, he has apologized for the divisiveness of his comments, but hasn't backed down from the notion that being gay is something people choose. Most scientists would disagree. Years of research suggest that people can't change their sexual orientation because they want to, and that trying can cause mental anguish.

Research indicates that the social stigma that surrounds lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender LGBT teens leads to a variety of health risks such as substance use, risky sexual behaviors, eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and victimization. An editorial in the September issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health calls on clinicians and health researchers to lead the charge in improving the health and well-being of U. LGBT teens. Clinicians can start by providing LGBT teens with high-quality, preventive care in a regular, private, and confidential environment. Health researchers can start by including information on sexual orientation and gender identity in health surveys and assessments. The editorial expands on a research study also appearing in the September issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health "Healthcare Preferences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Youth" that examined health care preferences among LGBT youth, and confirmed that LGBT teens want the same health care that all adolescents should receive.

Gay affirmative psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy for non-heterosexuals , specifically gay and lesbian clients, which focuses on client comfort in working towards authenticity and self-acceptance regarding sexual orientation , and does not attempt to "change" them to heterosexual , or to "eliminate or diminish" same-sex "desires and behaviors". In fact, embracing and affirming gay identity can be a key component to recovery from other mental illnesses or substance abuse. For many years, psychiatry viewed homosexuality as a mental illness. Current guidelines instead encourage psychotherapists to assist patients in overcoming the stigma of homosexuality rather than try to change their sexual orientation. Many gays and lesbians are rejected from their own families and form their own familial relationships and support systems that may also be unfamiliar to mental health professionals, who are encouraged to take into account the diversity of extended relationships in lieu of family.
