The rise in strangers wanting to meet through dating apps has called for new safety precautions to be put in place at pubs and hotels across the country. The police researched recent sexual assault cases in Sydney's CBD, Newtown, Kings Cross and Darlinghurst, and discovered alarming correlations between sexual assault and online dating. In half the cases of sexual assault reported to NSW Police, the perpetrator was known to the victim, through a dating app, through work or was a 'friend of a friend', The Daily Telegraph reported. A National Crime Agency report found online chatting built rapport between people before they even met, and put them at risk because they had built a false trust.
