Petrology Tulane University Prof. Stephen A. Nelson Radiometric Dating Prior to the best and most accepted age of the Earth was that proposed by Lord Kelvin based on the amount of time necessary for the Earth to cool to its present temperature from a completely liquid state. Although we now recognize lots of problems with that calculation, the age of 25 my was accepted by most physicists, but considered too short by most geologists. Then, in , radioactivity was discovered. Recognition that radioactive decay of atoms occurs in the Earth was important in two respects: It provided another source of heat, not considered by Kelvin, which would mean that the cooling time would have to be much longer.

Scientists use computer programs called climate models to understand how our planet is changing. Weather is a specific event—like a rain storm or hot day—that happens over a short period of time. A weather forecast can tell you what the weather will be like in a few hours or days from now. Climate , on the other hand, is the average weather conditions in a place over a long period of time—30 years or more. They use special computer programs called climate models. Climate models are simulations. A simulation is a way for us to understand something that would be difficult to experience in real life.

Thorium and uranium, which could be used for radioactive fuel, are found together in 34 regions that are areas of less than 80km wide. Members of the Borexino collaboration in Italy started by developing the technology to purge the materials from which they would build their detector of polluting radioactive ingredients. Yet when it comes to helping Guam veterans who have been historically exposed to toxic chemicals such as Agent Orange and radioactive materials, Veterans Affairs provides little to no help to these residents.
Radioactive isotopes have a variety of applications. Generally, however, they are useful because either we can detect their radioactivity or we can use the energy they release. Radioactive isotopes are effective tracers because their radioactivity is easy to detect. For instance, leaks in underground water pipes can be discovered by running some tritium-containing water through the pipes and then using a Geiger counter to locate any radioactive tritium subsequently present in the ground around the pipes. Recall that tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen.
