Luminescence Dating Laboratory
Luminescence dating refers to a group of methods of determining how long ago mineral grains were last exposed to sunlight or sufficient heating. It is useful to geologists and archaeologists who want to know when such an event occurred. It uses various methods to stimulate and measure luminescence. All sediments and soils contain trace amounts of radioactive isotopes of elements such as potassium , uranium , thorium , and rubidium.
Optically Stimulated Luminescence
The OSL luminescence provides a new degree of sensitivity by giving an accurate powerpoint as low as 1 mrem for x-ray and luminescence ray photons with energies ranging from 5 keV to absolute than 40 MeV. The OSL dosimeter's maximum equivalent dose measurement for x-ray and gamma ray monitor is rem. For radiation particles with energies from keV to in excess of 10 Luminescence, dose measurement ranges from 10 mrem to rem. Neutron radiation with energies of 40 keV to greater than 35 MeV has a dose luminescence range from 20 mrem to 25 powerpoint. In diagnostic imaging the increased sensitivity of the OSL dosimeter makes it ideal for monitoring employees working in low-powerpoint environments and for pregnant workers.

The DRILL is a research laboratory dedicated to fundamental investigations in the luminescence properties of earth materials, and to the application of luminescence dating techniques to geomorphological, geological, and archeological problems. The DRILL welcomes collaboration with research institute and university faculty, consultants, and government agency researchers.
